Woman with flowers - slowing down and being present

Do you ever feel like life is rushing by in a blur, leaving you feeling disconnected from your own experience of life? Are you yearning for a deeper connection to your soul's essence amidst the chaos of modern living? If so, you're not alone. In a world that glorifies busyness and constant movement, it's easy to disconnect from ourselves and the magic that surrounds us. But what if I told you that the key to finding your way back to yourself lies not in speeding up, but in slowing down?

These past few months, I've been deeply immersed in my Raindrop Movement Teacher Training course and devoted to my conscious movement and embodiment practices. One of the first lessons of the course is about slowing down. As my dear mentor/teacher stated, "Sometimes we have to slow down to speed up." This is crucial to allow ourselves to get back into our body. We become disembodied for a number of reasons, and in order to reconnect to our body, we need to slow our nervous system down to help us feel safer in the body again. And by doing this, it enables us to live more in our body and not in our head!

And here are three powerful lessons I learned:

  1. Presence - I noticed that I tend to move through life on a fast, autopilot pace with my head down! For example, I go on beach walks multiple times throughout the week and I often see dolphins and seals, however, I forced myself to walk really slow and one day I saw whales! Unbelievable! Had I been walking my usual fast pace, I would have missed the magic. In the process of slowing down, we witness the magic that surrounds us, and by rushing through life, we inadvertently bypass the extraordinary moments that await us when we take the time to be present.

  2. Awareness - I felt more of my internal experience and I had a heightened awareness of the sensations, thoughts, emotions, and energy in my body. My internal felt experiences helped me become deeply curious about what my body was signaling to me and I have become more intentional about the choices I am making.

  3. Stillness - There is so much power in pausing. I was shown a visual in a meditation that a lot of us (including myself) are feeling like we are in a small boat floating gently in the sea, with fog all around us. And at this moment in time, it's important to just be in the fog. The stillness that surrounds us is offering us deep wisdom and guidance. And if you are resistant to the metaphorical fog, that it is important to just be with the resistance. The more compassion we can offer ourselves in this moment of stillness, the more we clarity and insights we will gain.

It is through the process of slowing down that we are signaling to our bodies that we are safe, or safer, which allows us to open up to both our internal and external experiences.

Here are some quick practices to help you slow down:

  • Digital Detox

  • Mindful breathing

  • Movement breaks

  • Gratitude practice

  • Nature walks

  • Sensory check-ins

If a flower can blossom at her own pace without forcing or pushing, we can as well. We are just as magnetic, beautiful, powerful, and abundant, as a flower. There's a quiet power in allowing ourselves the space to grow and evolve without the pressure of constant acceleration and by honoring our own pace, we can tap into that inherent strength and vitality.

Overall, learning to slow down can lead to greater happiness, fulfillment, and a deeper embodied experience of life. This practice isn't about doing less; rather, it's about doing things with more intention, presence, and purpose. Recalibrating our relationship with time and reconnecting with the essence of our being are crucial aspects of our life's journey.

Additionally, slowing down involves savoring the journey rather than fixating solely on the destination. As you continue to integrate this wisdom into your life, may you find yourself navigating with greater ease, grace, and a newfound appreciation for the magic that surrounds you.
